Our hearts go out to the people of Japan and to all of those who have been affected by the events of the last few days. Japan is our close ally and partner. President Obama spoke with Prime Minister Kan soon after the earthquake. On behalf of the American people, he conveyed our deepest condolences and offered our Japanese friends whatever assistance is needed. March 13 - For information on the whereabouts and welfare of family and friends in Japan, please consult the State Department website or call the toll free number 1-888-407-4747, or 1-202-501-4444. American citizens in Japan should listen to local news reports, check with your local authorities and contact your neighborhood evacuation center.
